In a promotional move that should surprise absolutely no one, Charlie Puth's anticipated collaboration with Selena Gomez will be the official third single pulled from the 24-year-old's upcoming debut album Nine Track Mind, out on January 29. Teased through Instagram before its release, "We Don't Talk Anymore" finds Puth and Gomez dealing with the end of a relationship, although with more upbeat supporting production than one would have expected.
"We Don't Talk Anymore" is a proper, acoustically-driven, tropical beat-influenced duet that calls into mind the recent "I Know What You Did Last Summer" collaboration from Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello. Thought the latter sounds more urgent and dire, the Puth/Gomez release comes off more relaxed, as if both knew the love would eventually run out. It's a song that wishes the other party the best as they move forward, instead of placing blame.
The radio-ready production pairs well with the subtle vocal performances from both artists, it allows the artists. as well as the listeners, to reflect on what was good, and how it all went wrong. But the strongest aspect just might be the heartfelt, love-torn lyrical content. "Don't wanna know, what kind of dress you're wearing tonight, if he's holding onto you so tight, the way I did before," Puth bitterly sings before the chorus comes through.
The pairing was a no-brainer, especially when one takes into account the success both Puth and Gomez have experienced within the past year. Puth was featured on the number one "See You Again" by Wiz Khalifa, and has scored two Top 40 hits as a solo artist. Gomez sent her sophomore album Revival to the top of the charts, while singles "Good For You" and "Same Old Love" both peaked at number five. However, given the momentum, "We Don't Talk Anymore" isn't as groundbreaking or remarkable as one may have hoped.
While the somber break-up track is an easy listen, some aspects come off as lazy, and a tad boring. The vocal delivery from both artists and the songwriting are solid on the verses, but when the chorus comes through to shine, it falls a little flat. "We Don't Talk Anymore" is a bittersweet effort, the sentiment is intact, and even though the artist chemistry isn't as strong as it could be, hints of it are present. It's a good track that could have been great, if not added at the last minute.
