Second-Hand Wedding Dresses: A Sustainable Step Too Far? - Forbes

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 03:21 PM PDT

The fast-paced movement of consumer trends is now readily quantifiable through online search data based on 'intent to buy' as well as actual purchases. This is a powerful lens through which brands can determine what products to offer when, and to which consumers. In the case of fashion, the insight gained from collating search words and mapping clicks is part of the consumer puzzle that seeks to answer the most potent of questions - where is the industry heading and how do I get ahead of the curve to grab market share?

Well, if you are in the business of selling wedding dresses, you might want to consider your current business model in light of new data that launched today from fashion search platform Lyst. Lyst aggregates search data from thousands of online fashion stores, across 5 million products and 12,000 brands. According to Lyst, "there has been a 93% increase in views of pre-owned wedding dresses, with a 42% combined increase for wedding dress searches including the words "vintage" and "second hand" year on year". Alongside the rise of peer-to-peer selling and rental platforms, this seems to reinforce an ever-growing trend towards consumers monetizing their wardrobes.

Where Lyst adds power to wedding dress search data is by linking it to social media behavior. The interplay between major life events and how they feed our digital personas on social media creates a heady mix of accessible "real-life fantasy". Lyst conducted social media analysis to demonstrate that weddings have now become a "peak personal brand moment". More specifically, Instagram is the perfect platform for showcasing professional photography, supported by custom hashtags and 'made for Insta' visual moments.

When asked about their methodology they explained that they "use a social media monitoring tool that measures all mentions across Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, blogs, forums, news sites and more." By taking this approach they track mentions, sentiment and follower count across demographics, countries, languages, and devices. Lyst Communications Manager Camilla Clarkson goes on to say "this is how we rated the trendsetters, looking at the social media engagement with each couple, along with wedding hashtags."

Wedding fashion for both the happy couple and the guests in attendance is, therefore, a huge commercial opportunity for brands and retailers alike, with millions of customers searching for the outfit that will garner the most likes on the day. Given that "wedding guests are spending 26% more on their wedding outfit than they did 2 years ago", there are significant opportunities in this segment, according to the Lyst Wedding Report.

StillWhite

On receiving news of this report I was alerted to a world's largest wedding dress resale platform, which introduced itself as the "Airbnb of wedding dresses" (with a very similar logo to boot). Peer-to-peer selling platform Stillwhite has generated in excess of $26 million for its sellers to date and operates in 116 countries. Along with the obvious advantage of earning cash for the previous owner, the sustainability benefits to the planet of buying a second-hand wedding dress in favor of a new one are a cornerstone of the Stillwhite message. Understanding growing consumer sentiment towards purchasing more sustainable clothing and the power that gives to brands, StillWhite have quantified in broad terms their sustainability credentials.

StillWhite Sustainability

StillWhite.com

When asked about the basis of the above sustainability claims, Stillwhite explained that they "derived the numbers based on the calculations the Ellen Macarthur Foundation highlights." The methodology of the calculations was not explained on the website, but it appears to be based on the resources saved by avoiding virgin fibre creation and resources required to manufacture new wedding dresses.  It would be interesting to know if these savings are offset against the logistics of wedding dress shipping via their platform and additional resources, like the energy and chemicals required for dry-cleaning the resale items.

Stillwhite serves up big doses of inspiration, lifestyle, real weddings and image-driven features like 'wedding dresses for rebels'. The site feels more like an online community, rather than a shop, and looks more like a social media platform than an e-commerce one. No wonder, given the data revealed by Lyst strongly linking intent to purchase to "Insta-moments" and the desire for "likes".  Stillwhite have reported that sales have doubled over a 24 month period, with sales of 800,000 USD sold through the platform in February 2019.  They currently have 300,000 registered users across 171 countries and 43,000 dresses for sale.

This Stillwhite model is clever. The seller is part of a savvy club of people who get something back for one of the most expensive items of clothing they are ever likely to buy and thereby takes part in shaping someone else's life-defining day - all while doing their bit for the planet.

When asked how Stillwhite uses data to shape the customer journey they explained "Stillwhite.com uses data in every aspect to improve the user experience and user interface. We use it to best match potential buyers with sellers through understanding the buyers taste and accurately recommending dress types based on what the buyer already likes. This, in turn, increases conversion rates for sellers. Data is also used for listing optimization, creating a more seamless experience for the customer."

This begs the question of whether Stillwhite sees itself as a clothing retail company or a tech company - a question I recently asked peer-to-peer clothing rental platform HURR Collective. "Stillwhite.com is a tech company - 100%" was the response.

In the style of tech behemoths like Uber and Airbnb, Stillwhite.com is the world's largest online wedding dress marketplace, yet it owns no dresses. This provides yet more evidence that peer-to-peer data-driven business models are providing targeted and timely fashion business solutions, meeting consumer needs on both a personal and social (media) level.

18 Gorgeous Mother of the Bride Dresses, Inspired by Celebrity Moms’ Red Carpet Gowns - PEOPLE.com

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 02:21 PM PDT

So, your little girl is getting married! Between wedding planning and helping her pick the dress, you still have to find time to choose your ensemble for the big day. There's a lot to consider when picking your mother of the bride dress — first and foremost, you don't want to steal the spotlight. But that shouldn't stop you from wearing something with a little sparkle or a pop of color.

Stylish Hollywood moms like Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, and Connie Britton know a thing or two about dressing fancy since they do it all the time for the red carpet — and we happen to think some of their gorgeous gowns would make the perfect mother of the bride dresses. You might not have the budget to purchase that designer dress (after all, you're helping fund a wedding), so we found tons of lookalikes for way less. Keep scrolling to shop these elegant mother of the bride dresses!

A neutral-colored dress with beaded embroidery, like Nicole Kidman's Oscar dress, will make sure you stand out without overshadowing your daughter. With over 2,300+ raving reviews, this cap-sleeve sequin gown on Amazon is one of the most popular dresses mothers of the brides love to wear for the occasion.

Kate Middleton

The royal mom of three is no stranger to dressing to impress. During the 2018 BAFTA Awards, the Duchess of Cambridge walked the red carpet in a deep green, cap-sleeve gown. From its A-line silhouette to its gorgeous color, we think a similar style would be a perfect dress for a mother of the bride.

Put a spin on the classic little black dress! Sparkles give it an alluring charm that will catch the eye (and all the compliments), but won't make you the main attraction. Save Laura Dern's 2017 Academy Awards dress as inspiration.

Buy It! Morgan & Co Strappy Back Sequin Lace Gown, $149; nordstorm.com; PrettyGuide Women's 1920s Black Sequin Gatsby Maxi Long Evening Prom Dress, $39.99–$52.99; amazon.com; Nightway Geo-Sequined Gown, $159; macys.com

Meryl Streep

It's your daughter's day, but you're a star, too — at least it'll seem that way with all the photographs being snapped. So, why not show off a little with a dress as red as the red carpet? Take a cue from three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep's stunning red long-sleeve gown that she wore to the 2018 Academy Award.

Connie Britton

Opt for a rose gold dress alongside your blushing bride. A full-on sequin wrap dress, like Connie Britton's SAG Awards gown, is fitting if the event is more formal. If you're not into all sequin everything, choose this equally as gorgeous peach floral embroidered dress instead.

Hilary Duff

Take a cue from hip mom Hilary Duff and rock a belted, one-shoulder gown to your bride's wedding. She definitely did for the 2019 Golden Globes after-party. Looking for something a little less formal? Mothers of the bride, this similar one-shoulder, black tea-length dress is perfect for cocktail casual.

National retailer partners with nonprofit to provide prom dresses for those who can't afford them - PennLive

Posted: 27 Mar 2019 01:50 PM PDT

Shoppers can help one national retailer give away free prom dresses to those in need through the nonprofit, Becca's Closet.

For every regular-priced prom or social dress purchased in one of Macy's stores or on its website, this Saturday, the retailer will donate a new prom dress, up to 5,000 dresses, to Becca's Closet to give to a girl in need.

This is the third year, that Macy's is partnering with Becca's Closet, a nonprofit organization based in Florida that donates formal dresses to high school girls who are unable to purchase them for homecoming dances, military balls and proms.
